The Needles Lighthouse, built in 1859, was manned until its automation in 1994. Nearby, both the old and new Needles Battery are set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), managed by the National Trust. The National Coastwatch Institution's Needles Station also stands high above the cliffs.
