This camera is positioned 7.2 km southwest of the active Caliente cone, offering a rare vantage point of Santiaguito that reveals features often hidden from the more common eastern viewpoints. Below the dome complex lies a vast, rugged lava flow field—a broad accumulation of overlapping blocky lava flows that have advanced from the Caliente vent over many decades. The closest visible edge of this flow field is 3.7 km from the camera. These thick, slow-moving dacite flows build a steep, rubbly platform of cooled lava, ash, and collapse debris. Newer lava lobes occasionally inflate and shed block-and-ash avalanches down the same southwest pathways visible in this livestream. This camera angle clearly reveals the architecture of the Caliente dome, the structure of the lava flow field below it, and the canyons where pyroclastic flows and lahars often descend.

Located in western Guatemala near Quetzaltenango at an elevation of 3,772 m (12,375 ft) for the main Santa María stratovolcano, Santiaguito represents one of the world's most continuously active lava dome complexes. Nearly all modern activity originates from the Caliente vent, producing ash plumes, lava flows, and dome collapses. Watch for explosions and ash bursts as they rise above the dome, along with frequent volcanic activity that makes this a key site for volcanology research.
