This camera is situated on the southern tip of Þorbjörn. Þorbjörn is a 243 m high volcanic mountain next to the town of Grindavík.

The Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland has been highly active volcanically in recent months, with the latest eruption starting on November 20, 2024. This is the seventh volcanic event in the region since December 2023.

The eruption originated from a fissure about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) in length, releasing lava flows that have significantly affected nearby infrastructure. The popular Blue Lagoon spa had to temporarily shut down as lava neared the area, overtaking its parking lot and threatening surrounding buildings. To protect key sites, authorities installed barriers to redirect the lava flow.

As a safety measure, officials evacuated approximately 50 homes in Grindavík, a nearby town. The Icelandic Meteorological Office has been monitoring the situation closely, reporting that although there is no immediate risk to air travel, gas emissions could impact certain areas of the peninsula, including Grindavík.

By December 11, 2024, the volcanic activity had decreased, with lava flow rates slowing and no further significant spread observed. However, renewed ground uplift in the Svartsengi region suggests continued magmatic movement beneath the surface.

This sequence of eruptions follows an intense earthquake swarm in November 2023, marking the reactivation of this volcanic system after approximately 800 years of dormancy. The recent events represent an extraordinary period of geological activity for the area.
