Smith Island is one of the most distinctive and remote places in the Chesapeake Bay—a small, marshy island community where life still revolves around the water, tradition, and isolation.

Smith Island isn’t a single solid island but a cluster of low-lying marsh islands separated by narrow waterways. It sits about 10–12 miles offshore and is only accessible by boat.

What you’ll notice right away:

Endless marsh grasses and tidal creeks
Flat horizons with huge open skies
Water everywhere—more than land
A constant presence of wind, birds, and changing tides

It feels quiet, exposed, and a bit removed from modern mainland life.

The island has a few tiny villages, the main ones being:

Ewell
Rhodes Point
Tylerton

These are tight-knit, traditional communities with:

Modest homes, many on stilts
Docks instead of driveways
Golf carts and bikes instead of cars (very few roads)

The total population is small—just a few hundred people.
