After a successful fledging in 2025, the resident pair of Verreaux's Eagles have returned to their dramatic nest site in the Lillie Hills for another breeding season. Follow the story as it unfolds in real time - from courtship and egg-laying to chick development and, hopefully, another successful first flight.

The Lillie Hills within Selati Game Reserve have long been an important breeding site for Verreaux's Eagles. These powerful raptors prefer cliffs, rocky outcrops and escarpments, which provide safe nesting locations and excellent vantage points for hunting. From these elevated perches they play an important ecological role by helping regulate populations of animals such as rock hyrax (dassies), their primary prey.

During the 2024 breeding season, two eggs were laid but one was pushed to the edge of the nest and abandoned. Shortly after, unusual behaviour was observed when the adult eagles began pecking at the remaining egg. Experts suggested the birds may have detected the egg was infertile or that the embryo had stopped developing, leading them to consume the egg - a natural behaviour sometimes seen in birds of prey.

In 2025, viewers witnessed a far happier outcome as the pair successfully raised and fledged a healthy chick from this very nest.

Now the 2026 nesting season begins, and the cameras are rolling once again.
