The St. Louis River, the largest river flowing into the U.S. side of Lake Superior, is a key feature of West Duluth. It exhibits diverse landscapes from marshy estuarine waters to forested banks upstream, abounding with a variety of wildlife. Historically the shorelines around the part of the river seen from this camera, known as St. Louis Bay, have played host to an industrial activities like shipping, shipbuilding, lumber milling, paper manufacturing, and iron and steel production.

Two major highway bridges, the John A. Blatnik Bridge (a.k.a. the "High Bridge") and the Richard Ira Bong Memorial Bridge (a.k.a. the "Bong Bridge") connect Duluth and Superior, bracketing either end of the portion of the St. Louis River Estuary known as St. Louis Bay. These waters remain a vital natural resource and a symbol of resilience for the neighborhoods of north Superior and West Duluth.
