We're very sorry to report that both of this season's chicks have been lost. Jupiter, the first to hatch, sadly passed away at around six weeks of age, overnight on Sunday 14 June 2026. Our thanks go to everyone who watched, and to the moderators and community who shared their knowledge so generously throughout.

Jupiter has been retrieved from the nest for a post-mortem examination. Results can take up to around three weeks, and we'll share what we learn once we're able to.

Over the next couple of days the camera will switch to solar power to conserve its methanol fuel cell (the fuel is costly), so the live feed may be intermittent at times — thank you for bearing with us. Loki and Caitir remain in their territory, and we'll keep watching them. Subscribe to follow what comes next from the nest.

Meet Loki and Caitir — a white-tailed eagle pair nesting on North Uist, in the woodland surrounding Uist Forest Retreat in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. White-tailed eagle eggs take around 38 days to hatch. This is a wild nest, and this season was a hard reminder that nothing here is guaranteed — but that is what makes it real.

🔬 Research with Redwing Ecology
Most of what is known about white-tailed eagle diet in Scotland comes from analysis of food remains and pellets collected at nests and roost sites. That information doesn't provide the full picture, and there are still considerable gaps in our knowledge of eagle diet and their interactions with other species. This nest camera offers a rare opportunity for real-time, detailed study — of both prey and nesting behaviour — and the footage captured here is contributing to research led by Redwing Ecology.

It adds to detailed data first gathered here in 2019, which examined prey deliveries and incubation habits as well as diet — so the behavioural picture has a baseline to build on too. Together this is one of the most detailed real-time records of white-tailed eagle prey and behaviour assembled to date, and we'll keep building on both sets of data wherever we can.
